How the calculation works
Fuel used = distance ÷ MPG × 4.54609.
Estimated fuel cost = litres used × fuel price per litre.
A worked example
A 160-mile journey in a vehicle averaging 45 MPG uses about 16.16 litres. At £1.52 per litre, the estimated fuel cost is about £24.57.
What to allow for
- Real fuel economy changes with traffic, driving style, weather, load and road conditions.
- This calculator estimates fuel only. It does not include parking, tolls, servicing, depreciation, driver costs or other journey expenses.
- Use your own recent MPG and pump price for the most useful estimate.
Useful questions
Should I use motorway MPG or combined MPG?
Use the figure that best reflects the journey you are estimating. If you have your own real-world average from recent driving, that will usually be more useful than a manufacturer figure.
Does this work for diesel and petrol?
Yes. Enter your vehicle’s MPG and the current price per litre for the fuel you use.
Can I use this for an electric vehicle?
No. An EV calculator needs energy consumption in kWh and electricity pricing rather than MPG and litres.
